Tongue Piercing

HISTORY

Tongue piercing was practiced in a ritual form by the ancient Aztecs, Mayas of Central America and the Haida, Kwakiutul, and Tlinglit tribes of the American Northwest. The tongue was pierced to draw blood to propitiate the gods, and to create an altered state of consciousness so that the priest or shaman could communicate with the gods.

Tongue Piercing Aftercare

1) Clean your tongue piercing after everything that goes in your mouth other than water for the first week.

2. ) Check to make sure your balls are tight once in the morning and again at night. Wash your hands before touching your piercing forever!

3. The first morning after the piercing is done the swelling will be at the highest point. Before you sleep the night of the piercing, take an anti-inflammatory pill if you can, have a pitcher of cold water, ice cubes and your anti-inflammatory pill ready for the morning. In the morning crush ice, then allow to melt on your tongue. Do not suck on them. The action of sucking requires your tongue muscle. Keep your tongue relaxed all the time. After five to fifteen minutes the swelling will start to go down. Always have cold water with ice available to keep the swelling down and to aid in the healing.

* anti-inflammatory - ( Ginseng, A Good Natural Multivitamin )  ( Aleve Naproxen, ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Midol, etc... )

3) Oral hygiene is important! Allowing the tongue piercing to heal quickly. Purchase a non-alcohol antiseptic mouth wash, ( Biotene, Oral-B ), if you can not find these ( Original Listerine Yellow ) mix  50 / 50 Water / Listerine. While brushing teeth, brush your tongue extremely gently. After 2nd or 3rd day may notice a yellow film on the top the tongue, this is the normal and will disappear in a few days. A whitish circle around the piercing on the tongue, this is the tongues version of a scab and it will also disappear. Do not play with the piercing. Playing with a new tongue piercing causes longer healing time.

4) Make positively sure the balls are tightened everyday before sleeping and after waking up after you have brushed your teeth and washed your hands. Holding the bottom ball under your tongue, twist the top ball clockwise to tighten it. (Right to Tighten / Left to Loosen) This may seem backwards performing this yourself. Do this every day to prevent the balls from coming off. If you swallow a ball, it will not hurt you. The ball will pass through your system in a day or so. Contact your piercer to acquire a replacement ball or barbell.

After 2 Weeks

Re-Visit your piercer to have the barbell shortened, this is important to prevent dental damage from biting the barbell.
